MapMyRide RAGBRAI 2011 (needs corrections)

I was having a hard time creating a map in Google Maps so that I could see what was what with RAGBRAI 2011. I ended up doing the map in MapMyRide. As it turns out I just renewed my membership, though I’d forgotten all about it. My credit card is taking a beating. Sigh.

Anyway this needs a lot of correction but it is, as far as it goes, close the actual ride. I will, of course, be fixing it as I get better information…

And if you’ve got the Google Earth plugin you can actually fly this route…wow!

RAGBRAI 2011 Route Map…

The RAGBRAI 2011 route map was put up this weekend. Since I have no real idea of what’s in Iowa I can’t really say much about it. I will, of course be checking it out as best I can.

You should really go to the RABRAI site and check it out…

The image isn’t great, but it does link to the real map.

I’m still looking around for a Google Maps copy. I’m working on one but it’ll be rough as I don’t know the “real route.” By that I mean the actual streets we’ll be navigating in towns. Between towns it should be good but…well I’m not from Iowa.

Camping gear…for…RAGBRAI!!!

It’s not so much the heat, it’s the stupidity!

Yes, it seems I’m going to RAGBRAI.

I’ll be using Pork Belly Ventures. It seems they are friends of friends. They’ll be toting my stuff and putting up the tent they’re renting me, but I still need a couple of things….

A sleeping bag, a pad, and a pillow, and a duffel bag to put it all in. Luckily I can get all this stuff. Unfortunately I’ve no real clue what I need. So…I’ll be writing the PBV folks and, yes, asking.

I’m thinking of some sort of Thermarest pad, a 40+ sleeping bag (hey, I live in Hawaii and really don’t use bags), and some soft of collapsible pillow because I deserve a decent pillow.

Well that’s it for the moment. I’ve got some shopping to do!

Back from Hilo…

I returned from Hilo on Monday evening after a lovely five night stay. No it wasn’t completely a vacation, but I was able to relax a bit and do some riding. Here’s a shot of my bike and Mauna Kea in the background. The camera makes the volcano pretty small but it dominates the landscape if you are actually there…

Of course riding wasn’t the only thing I did. My mom has been using dial-up internet for years. I finally couldn’t take it anymore and decided that for Christmas I’d upgrade her to something better.

She was okay with the idea when I brought it up but she absolutely didn’t want it on a bill she paid which meant that adding DSL to her phone line or adding the service to her basic cable was out.

The Big Island can be a bit spotty when it comes to broadband. Spotty is actually erring on the generous side. I was in Puna doing some volunteer business over the weekend and could barely get my Sprint HTC EVO to pick up a signal, phone or broadband, at all. In fact it works almost every place at my mom’s but the laundry room where it doesn’t work at all.

Still Mobi PCS has their Hele service and their service map shows that it should work. Okay, it was a pretty good price, $30 a month or so, about what you’d expect. I decided to go for it.

I signed up for the two year plan so I could get the equipment subsidized. I chose their MiFi setup as it seemed to be the most flexible.

I took it all home (to mom’s) with some trepidation but felt somewhat comfortable because of the seven day return policy. I kept my fingers crossed.

Against all my expectations it worked quite well from the get go…almost. I should mention that because she hadn’t really updated her software over a dial-up line I spent quite a bit of time updating virus definitions as well as all those XP updates. Then her AOL wouldn’t work…sigh. I’m not an AOL user myself, but it seems to work for her so I wanted to be sure she had access. Updating to the newest version took care of it and….

Voila! At the end up of all the installation and updating I had enough time print my boarding pass and hele to the airport.

Tomorrow, Thanksgiving, I’ll find out from mom just how well it works.

Old Raleigh…

I go to the Big Island frequently to visit my folks and since I’ve started biking again I’ve wanted to go biking. But, as nice as my Bike Friday is, it’s a little to expensive to haul it back and forth just for weekend rides. Taking to the mainland isn’t a problem, but for such shorts stays and the number of times I go the baggage fees would add up quickly.

The answer? A used bike of course. I was on the Big Island a couple of weeks ago (for a family reunion) and bought a used Raleigh. This trip I was able to have it built up a bit, new cables, new pedals, new bar tape, and to top it off a Brooks B-17. It needs a bit of work yet, but for a real 10 speed it’s a sweet ride. Here’s some images of the whole deal:
